Relationship - Vibraphone & Marimba Duet - v2 Update - Early Draft - Eric Peel
Relationship is a musical duet, or an actual romantic (or even just friendly) duet between two individuals; vibraphone and marimba.
The story is classic. Throughout the piece, rhythms and melodies of both instruments compete with, yet complete each other. There is conflict and resolution like any great story. It's a musical presentation of a real-life relationship.
This duet was originally written for 5-Octave Marimba and 4-Octave Vibraphone. Both this and a transposition with 4.3 Octave Marimba and 3-Ocatve Vibraphone will be included.

    When you compose, do you prefer Notation software or a DAW?

    • @EricPeelMusic
      @EricPeelMusic 2 місяці тому

      Finally a useful question, other than the tiresome "wHaT sOfTwArE dO yUo UsE??? I've been writing in a DAW for a few years now, exporting the MIDI file to notate in Sibelius later. It offers higher quality and more realistic audio. But it's a little more time consuming and makes it more difficult to update the music later. Lately, I use Sibelius' and Kontakt's scripting methods to make the playback as realistic and time-efficient as possible within Sibelius, with the MIDI is channeled to the DAW in realtime. That way, there's only one file to maintain and I get to use the DAW's mixer for the best playback possible. For one example, I'm developing a Sibelius plugin that can display and edit dynamics as nodes and lines underneath the staff just like a DAW. There is of course Santiago Barx's Graphical MIDI Tools 2, but it cannot do exponential and logarithmic curves yet. These curves are essential for realistic crescendos and diminuendos. One way Sibelius has improved is how you can loop the audio similarly to a DAW. There is a long list of things I keep begging Avid to add in and it seems like they are slowly, overtime. Dorico has some pretty useful playback tools, but in practice, it's nowhere near as good as Sibelius with a DAW, yet. No scripting either. What about you?

      @@EricPeelMusic I previously used Sibelius and currently use Dorico and Cubase together. (I also think Sibelius is better than Dorico.) To be honest, I'm confused between DAW and Notation software. When I want to export the results as digital music, I am worried because I have to work with DAW again. I'm confused about this work flow, so I was wondering which work flow you prefer. After seeing your comment above, I have some understanding of what I should do. thank you.

      @@user-od2gc6er7m That's one thing I'm still figuring out. When I want to export an audio from Sibelius, I need to either play it in realtime in the DAW and literally record it to a track and then bounce that. Or need to export the MIDI from Sibelius, open it in the DAW, and bounce that. But if that's the only price to pay (along with all the script development time) I think it's worth it for the maintainability and no compromise to audio and realism.

      I'm not sure what mallets Nick used because I never asked him. Looks like yarn to me. If you're going to go yarn (please go synthetic so you don't pay for the exploitation and abuse of sheep per my recommendation), go with a hard yarn mallet. • @EricPeelMusic
      @EricPeelMusic 5 місяців тому

      Nice! The demo samples are finger-style but I suggest trying pick, slap or any technique at any moment you want! Then settle for whichever sounds best at any given time. If you can’t pedal the effects, then use your amp to add a bit of drive, otherwise the tone might not be bright or sustained enough to cut through. Then control all the dynamics by strumming softer or harder at the moments the volume pedal would be needed. Let me know how it goes for you!

    The real delight from All of your pieces including your remasters are your dynamics. You really craft with terrific precision when different instruments are to crescendo and decrescendo even within measures which is something I have come to emulate in my own works thanks to yours and David Wise's influences.

    • @EricPeelMusic
      @EricPeelMusic 7 місяців тому

      Yeah, professional performers play with a lot of intricacy in their dynamics and it’s an effort to sequence that all in. I prefer just playing the audio through with eyes closed and if I hear any note or passage that needs adjusting, just nudge a node, change a curve or series of nodes/curves up or down one or two increments. As you can see, any value is welcome - whereas sheet music will only have 8 values - ppp, pp, p, mp, mf, f, ff, fff. While 8 seems like enough, 127 is a lot better and I kid you not, there are times when even 127 is not enough 😆 So whatever is written in the sheets, the performer really needs to interpret it musically and humanly. Never heard of David Wise but I’ll check him out! Thanks!

    • @EricPeelMusic
      @EricPeelMusic 8 місяців тому

      I did try that while writing this and it didn’t fit well in my opinion. But if you’re performing it, feel free to try a slow motor! Please check out my piece “Metabolism”. It has the slow motor for the first part. Combined with the syncopation of the marimba, it sounds pretty cool I think. Here’s a link: ua-cam.com/video/n_ea4AH3vVs/v-deo.html I think part of the reason why composers don’t write for the motor very much is because most vibraphones in the world don’t have a working motor! Almost every high school I’ve worked with, the vibes motor was busted or had parts missing.

      @EricPeelMusic I really love the opening section, but it doesn't flow into the next part because the resolution is very conclusive and doesn't really lend itself to the next section. What if instead resolving it like you do you, you use the built anticipation of the suspended notes to pull you into the next section. Right now it plays as "okay, this part is done". Overall, the melodies relate to each other, but that transition is just abrupt. I'm gonna listen on repeat and get back to you with more thoughts.

    waited so long for this and MAN was it worth it! audio sounds great and i love the way you kept that video slideshow style from the original version. if i could offer one piece of critique: at 3:41 at DD i feel as though the bass sets up this awesome groove that the return to the chorus just doesn't seem to match, especially with the timpani joining it a bit towards the end of DD. to me, it doesn't sound necessarily out of place, but its more like we hear this super fun groove that we want more of but just don't get. admittedly i wouldn't know how to compose a better section, but i feel like that energy should be taken through the chorus, something that a coda may not be able to do. regardless, wonderful piece and i'm going to bug the crap out of my friends from the high school i graduated from to play this bc I LOVE IT

      @EricPeelMusic 10 місяців тому

      Thanks, Eric! That’s the first negative feedback I’ve received in a long time and I greatly appreciate it. You nailed it though, DD is one of the parts I couldn’t get right. But instead of forcing it and potentially making it worse, I’m leaving it for the v3 update to figure out. It will probably be obvious what should be done about it as time goes on. Believe it or not I actually wrote out a transition into a drum solo there. And then the end of the solo would be where the Chorus coda is, kind of like the end of the drum break in Altitude Wellness. Would have made the piece a lot longer than it already is. Do you think that would be better though? Would be delighted if you did bug your alma mater percussionists to play it!

    I love music that takes you on a journey. You are a music mastermind, I’ll totally ask my band director to play this for percussion ensemble!

    Do you guys like the classic pano animation or new flip animation more? Or the motion pictures? Or the mix as is? How does the audio sound?

      It sounds fantastic and the animation is spot on! What editing programs did you use for the animation and audio?

      @@manilapremiummusic Thank you! Video is done in After Effects and audio is done in Logic. Do you like the pano style or flip style more? Doing both has been very time consuming so I'm trying to figure what to focus on for future vids.

      I think matching it to the music is best just like you did here. Both are great to watch.

      @@EricPeelMusic then I'd say the classic pano style is better. the audio sounds great, really brings out the best in your compositions.

      Thanks for your feedback. I’m planning to go pano style crazy with the upcoming Relationship update. Its a marimba and vibraphone duet in case you didn’t know. Gonna animate every single object independently similarly to Consumed by the Universe v2, but only about 4x crazier 😝

    Wow! I’ve played this with my percussion group 12 years ago for a perc ensemble competition. Very challenging and very fun to play in the eyes of a 15 year old girl 😂🥰 brings back so many memories…..love this arrangement c

      @george9065 Рік тому

      no part in particular but around the 2nd A section you're kinda playing all over the keyboard with some funky coordination stuff. I do really enjoy the arrangement overall though.

      I arranged this a long time ago and some stickings and positions are awkward. I’ll be updating it eventually with everything fixed up. You said you enjoy it overall but if its not usable for you bc of the weird writing, I’m happy to refund you or offer one of my other solos for free. Just let me know. Thanks for your feedback!
